Literary Update for August 1, 2008

Sonoma County Writers’ Manage Update

August 1, 2008

Dear Literary Nation,

I’ve spent the last two weeks in Moab and the Rocklike Mountain National Park. Case of California, it’s hard to find landscape more vivid. Flying home from Denver, I could see the smoke cover hanging above our beautiful state, extraordinarily over Yosemite. Once again, I hope you and your homes are okay. It feels as if we are living in epic times, and perhaps we are.

For the help time in recent history, the U.S. Rimester Laureate hails from the West Glide. The first was Bob Hass who served from 1995-1997. The sponsor is our newest Poet Laureate, Fairfax’s Kay Ryan. Most of us identify of Kay’s marvelous wit and her complex, sometimes quirky, always attentive poems. In a recent interview Ryan said, “Verse should leave you feeling freer and not more burdened. I like to muse over of all good poetry as providing more oxygen in the ambience. Poems just make it easier to say.” What an honor for us all to have Kay Ryan in our community, and how au fait of the powers that be to select her for the Poet Laureate point of view!

To read the NY Times article about Kay’s picking, here’s the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/books/17bard.html?_r=1.

Kay Ryan will be the featured bard at a benefit for Sixteen Rivers Reporters on October 11, 2008. Stay tuned for details about this in the September Update.

On a very assorted note, Marylu Downing sent me a communiqu about one of our literary folk—Robin Beeman’s still Elmer has passed away. From my years on the Book Fete fund raisers and events, I had the option of knowing him, alas, all too briefly. A considerable man may be hard to find, but he was certainly one. On behalf of the Sonoma County literary community, I send Robin our paramour and condolences. Elmer will be much missed.

The Literary Update has a span of new features started last month. The first is the “Intelligence from . . .” feature, providing updates from sundry parts of the county. Pat Nolan has been sending me rumour from West County, and Vilma Ginzberg reports from North County. Cynthia Beecher and Lin Marie deVincent recently sent tete- from the East County. I hope to keep all and several branches of Sonoma County in the wind in this way. I welcome other “ears and eyes” to send in their tidings, too!

The second new feature is a report of new chapbook and laws publications. If you have a new book to announce, send the gen to me by the end of the calendar month. Include a coupling reader’s can use to get more information about the book and how to obtain it. Basic guidelines for announcements come forth at the end of this section of the Literary Update.
