The Drive Home: Part 1 - Introduction
I’m from Michigan and more specifically the Detroit compass. The biggest news story around here over the last week has had to do with Chrysler, and their conceivable acquisition by General Motors or Renault-Nissan.
Credentials
Chrysler was purchased in 1998 by Daimler-Benz in a ‘fusing of equals’ that quickly turned out be nothing but equal. The pairing was designed to frame a global auto powerhouse, combining the most artistically of Chrysler, the number three American automaker with the richest of the German automaker Daimler-Benz. The cultures never blended and nor did the synergies take wash. In 2007, 80.1% of Chrysler was sold to Cerberus, a secretively equity firm that was taking a first on one occasion venture into the automotive market. The unconsumed 19.9% remains with Daimler.
Cerberus promised that they were committed to turning the operations of Chrysler around, and expressed their full commitment to game an automaker.
Many in the industry were skeptical for two reasons. First, many unsocial equity transactions often involve the private open-mindedness firm taking a very short-sighted interest in the suite they purchase, often ending up with the acquired house being carved up or dissolved altogether.
Two shakes of a lamb's tail, the American auto industry has been in a free-born fall over the past few years, and many planning that the Cerberus executives, largely bizarre unacquainted with with automotive, would not know what they were faced with. The problems were as a d many factors. To name a few: lower market parcel due to foreign competition, rapidly rising vigour care and pension costs for retirees, and most recently, a unannounced decline in SUV and truck sales due to higher gas prices. Sales of these products had, for years, been the most advantageous sectors for the GM, Ford, and Chrysler, also known as ‘The Big Three’. The coalition of these, and other, factors have led to massive red ink and multiple re-structurings.
However, the ink no more than dried on the new ownership when rumors were recently confirmed that Cerberus is in discussions with Non-specific Motors about a possible acquisition, as Cerberus wishes to beat it the auto industry. The main point for GM’s interest is that Chrysler, despite losing on the loose sums of money, has a large stockpile of loot. GM, however, is not only reporting losses, they’re also afire through cash, and could use the $11 billion or so that Chrysler still holds.
The necessary reason that this is news in the area is because the Michigan restraint, especially the Metro Detroit section, is largely reliant on the auto industriousness, as it has been for decades. This is hard to believe presupposed the reputation that Detroit has now, but The Motor Municipality was, at one time, one of the largest and prosperous cities in the hinterlands. It was by no coincidence that Detroit was at its peak of prosperity, prominence, and population at the same time as when the Big Three dominated the universal auto market and one could argue, the wide-ranging economy. Detroit and the auto assiduity are tied together very tightly, and a GM and Chrysler merger would most certainly head up to tens of thousands of job losses in the space. Consider that:
both companies have their world headquarters in the close, within 25 miles of one another. both companies have their detailed centers for research and development within miles of one another both companies figure largely the same blend of automobiles: SUVs, cars, lithe trucks, crossovers, etc.Much of this overlap would be eliminated, and our square would be hit hard. Plants would be closed, hundreds of thousands of straight feet of office space would be opened up, jobs would be vanished just between the two companies, not to mention the ruffling effect on the multiple suppliers that are also located in the field.
Detroit and Michigan haven’t done well for the last few years. For at least the last three years, we’ve been in a ‘one-federal’ recession which has largely been tied to stupendous problems with the automakers. Many of the problems being felt around the stay of the country, such as declining home values, higher foreclosure rates, job losses and low excrescence, are old hat to Michigan residents.
There’s also a turn that Renault-Nissan could purchase Chrysler, which would as likely as not create less job losses, but would still be crippling nonetheless. In other words, ‘The Move Home’ is looking like it will be a attack ride.
The Series
I wanted to annul a few blog entries addressing this picture, and the state of the American industry in community. I will call it ‘The Drive Home’. The topics I’m planning are:
Does the auto labour still drive America? Government bailouts and the auto manufacture Overseas competition and what it really means Distinction and the American automakersDisclaimers
Disclaimer 1: Things are changing so devoted that I expect the list above to change. Each day brings new rumour, and as a result, some of the items may get pushed out or merged, or new topics could be added. Either way, I presume the first series posted on Money Beagle to be an provocative one, and I hope it gets people talking and sheds some light-hearted to those that might not know or understand the impact of what is currently event in the American auto market.
I may also mix in other posts not mutual to the series, just so I’m keeping things mongrel up a bit.
Disclaimer 2: I once worked when for one of the Big Three about two years ago. I did not have a good experience there. I was hired in for a settle that did not directly touch work that I’d done in the since, but was given the assurance that I was a fit, that I’d be trained, eased in and mentored. Preferably, on day one, the person that was supposed to mentor me gave their comment, and I was simply handed their work mid-cascade with no mentoring. I was given very little training, and that which I did greet assumed a great deal of till experience. To top it off, I had a manager that did not believe that her employees asking questions was a proper thing, as she would respond to most with either sarcasm or disbelief that I didn’t be acquainted with what I was asking.
I’m not patting myself on the back when I say this, but except for this job, I’ve excelled in every job I’ve ever had since graduating college in 1996. In happening it was largely due to my previous successes that I did not let this found my confidence, and has led to me achieving success in the bent I currently hold.
I say this because since this happened, I’ve had particular thoughts and emotions tied to this poor as a church-mouse experience that have played into my thoughts about the Big Three, specifically about the house I worked for. For the most part, I’ve come to terms with things and have certitude that I can separate my personal experience from the ‘bigger exact replica’ that I hope to write about here, but still felt it advantage mentioning, just in case I go ‘off the rails’ at all.
So, I promise you all join me for ‘The Drive Domestic’. Buckle up and enjoy the outing!
